When asked to write an 'objective critic' of Aliaj, I immediately declined the proposal; I am aware that writing such a piece is an impossible task for me. This band has become so important to me that I could never be objective about its songs or its members! But after some reflection, I realized I still needed to write something about Aliaj - if not as an objective critic, as an emotional farewell. Life being what it is, it goes on, and the band is about to play its last chords. The guys thus deserve to be remembered for who they are: an 'alloy' of friends who got together for fun... and ended up making great music.
The first time I heard Aliaj, I was instantly hooked by the energetic guitar, the thumping drums, the melodic bass... 'Hai!'... 'Come on!', sings Dan. How can I resist that, even for a second? Aliaj prompts me to show them all I've got, but they're the ones that pour out their hearts and overwhelm me with their contagious energy. 'Hai!' is, like its video, a long run straight forward; you don't know what you're running to, but you need to keep going, even when the song is over...! So this is what I did: I listened to the next song, 'Vând'.
And I heard a message, different than everything I had heard before. Listening to Aliaj, I discovered rockers 'adevãrați', playing real music, telling me what they think of the world, without pretension. Inspired by the greatest, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Who, U2, Franz Ferdinand, among others, the members of Aliaj took the best and still made it their own. Their music exudes freedom and fun; the 'Indie do-it-yourself attitude' Aliaj claims, it serves with humour and wit. And I've only described two of their songs...
The list thus goes on and on: the sensitive 'Doar noi', the melodic 'Singur', the critical 'Revista oamenilor frumosi', the ironical 'TVZeu'... Each and every Aliaj song touched me in its own, special way; first through the music, and then, slowly, through the lyrics (vorbesc numai puțin româneşte!). This is only the proof that the charm and talent of Aliaj transcends languages and cultures. Every time I hear their songs, I am always surprised to discover something new!
Yes, Aliaj is coming to an end, but to me, it will always live on through the music. My only regret is that I will never see them live...! This farewell to Aliaj would not be complete without me telling the past and actual members how grateful I am for their music. Dan, Alex, Ioan, Paul, Dani, mulțumesc! I wish you all the best in your future enterprises, whether or not you pursue your musical careers. :)
